The Media Missed It: Octuplets is Not About Numbers. But About Method and Means to Procreate

Dear Friends of Catholic Action for Faith & Family,

The news media frenzy over the eight babies born to one mother in Southern California is amazing in that they are obsessed with the number while oblivious to the means. Yes, eight surviving multiple births is indeed newsworthy. Sadly, the secular culture of death despises large families and thus the mortal sin, from their perspective, is having so many babies at one time. Morally speaking, however, from a Judaeo-Christian and even from a Natural Law perspective, the amount of pregnancies is irrelevant. Whether a woman has one child, twins, triplets or even octuplets is ethically neutral. The moral act is not the number of children but the method and means used to procreate them.

The secular media is blind to the sinfulness and immorality of IVF (in vitro fertilization). Nevertheless, it is wrong to conceive artificially outside the womb and outside the conjugal act of husband and wife. This woman is unmarried but the media is blind to illegitimate pregnancies. She had her eggs artificially fertilized, which again does not bother the press. In fact, many newspapers and television reporters took moral umbrage that the normal practice of selective embryonic transfer did not take place. Usually, several eggs are harvested either from one woman over period of time or from several women all at once. Then either donated sperm from an anonymous donor or from the husband (or boyfriend) are used to fertilize in a test tube or Petri dish. If eight embryos are produced, only two to four are harvested an inserted inside the womb of the mother and the rest are destroyed or frozen. Later, as the pregnancy progresses, the better looking and developing embryos are allowed to live and one or more of the 'less attractive' ones are destroyed. Usually, IVF results in at least one to four or more aborted embryos when all said and done.

Ironically, the unethical treatment of embryonic human life is never examined in the media. They prefer to focus on the fact that a woman wanted and got multiple births and the sheer number of them intrigues these social elites. Forget that she got pregnant using immoral techniques and that now she wants to make a million dollars telling her story on Oprah. Out of wedlock regnancy, in vitro fertilization, et al. is but means to an end. How utilitarian, pragmatic and typically secular. It is a blessing that all eight children survived. According to the world, it is a sin that so many were born. In the eyes of God, the sin was the means and method employed to bring about the pregnancies. At least she did not terminate some of the embryos before or after implantation. That would have been abortion, which our world condones. Her crime in secular terms is that she is a multiple mother.

This is why we NEED Catholic Action for Faith & Family to TEACH our people that the only morally good act (end) is one that is done with and by morally good motives (intention) and means. We need to remind our people that killing one or more embryos in IVF is as much murder as aborting them in the womb. We need to promote sound morality where sex and having children is reserved within the confines of traditional marriage of one man and one woman in a permanent and faithful covenant of mutual love. We must reward and not penalize large families and help all parents not just the ones who have more socially acceptable smaller numbers of children. Movie stars and celebrities must stop glamorizing children out of wedlock as well as sex outside marriage. Basically, we need to reaffirm what Pope Paul VI taught in Humanae Vitae 40 years ago to a world that has gone deaf and blind to the moral truths surrounding marriage, family and sexuality.

On Inauguration Day Let’s Remember: It Was Wrong To Uphold Slavery And It Was Wrong To Uphold ...

Dear Friends of Catholic Action for Faith & Family,

Tuesday, January 20th, 2009, marks an historical day for our nation. The first African-American became President of the United States of America. That would never have been possible had the Supreme Court decision of 1857 (Dred Scott v. Sanford) remained intact. The ruling declared that no black person, whether free or slave, could ever vote or be elected into public office. Their very personhood was denied by this infamous decision. Fortunately, people of faith and good will worked arduously and pressured Congress to pass the 13th amendment in 1865 which abolished slavery and the 15th amendment in 1870 which recognized African-Americans as full citizens and eligible to vote in all elections.

The irony is that two days after the first black President is inaugurated, the nation remembers another Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade (1973). That ruling declared the unborn child to be a non-person and subject to indiscriminate death by abortion. The Supreme Court was WRONG in 1857 and it was WRONG in 1973. It was wrong to uphold slavery and it was wrong to uphold abortion. Both crimes unjustly punished innocent human persons. Whether black or white, born or unborn, human beings have inalienable rights from God and they are protected by the Constitution, chiefly the RIGHT TO LIFE, LIBERTY AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS. Slaves had no freedom and the lives of unborn children are endangered by abortion.

Just as it took men and women of good will and of religious faith to found the Abolitionist movement, likewise, those same kind of people fought the injustice of racial segregation. Today, the civil and human rights of the unborn CRY and SCREAM for justice. People of faith and good will MUST respond as they did before. Slavery and Segregation were eradicated only because the immoral laws were changed. That happened only because the majority of Americans (who are good) finally spoke up and spoke out and defeated the evil that had entered our land. Evil does not need large numbers of followers; it merely needs a lot of good people to keep quiet and inactive. When good people of faith remain silent and do nothing to stop or even diminish evil, then it is a sin of omission of the highest proportion.

Many of the United States Bishops are asking pastors to place post-cards in their bulletins this month addressed to US Senators and Representatives. How many parishioners will actually take the few minutes to sign, stamp and mail this card? It is a public disavowal and repudiation of the pending FOCA (Freedom of Choice Act) legislation. That bill will unravel and undo all the progress made since Roe v. Wade (much by the late Henry Hyde).

If you and I are too busy to send a post-card and too busy to pray that either our new President will veto this bill or that our Congress will kill it beforehand, then shame on us. It took an amendment to the Constitution to undo the evil committed by the highest court in the land when it denied legal personhood to African-Americans. It may very well take another amendment to undo the evil of Roe v. Wade and recognize the personhood of every unborn baby in the womb. Whether they are called embryos, fetuses, zygotes, et al., they are genetically HUMAN (not animal and not plant). The DNA is not only human but it is DISTINCT and UNIQUE from the mother's DNA. Yet, the oxymoron 'pro-choice' (irrational nomenclature since the unborn is given no choice to stay alive) crowd wants to treat the baby in the womb as a non-person just as slave owners did to African-Americans a century and half ago.

FOCA needs to die before it ever becomes law. Men and women, white and black, Christian and Jew, Catholic and Protestant, all people of faith and of good will need to protect the most vulnerable and most innocent of our human race, the unborn. Saint Gianna sacrificed her own life to save the life of the unborn child within her when others would have easily 'terminated the pregnancy' (a.k.a., aborted the baby). Bishop Robert Vasa of the diocese of Baker said it succinctly "those who profess to love God, but back abortion, are liars."

Rev.
As We Enter 2009 Let’s Remember That Marriage Is Sacred, And Only Between ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN

Dear Friends of Catholic Action for Faith and Family,

As we begin a new civil new year (2009), Holy Mother Church celebrated the birthday of Our Savior (Christmas), the Holy Family (the Sunday after Christmas), Epiphany and the Baptism of the Lord (Sunday after Epiphany). These liturgical events are more than historical remembrances of the past, however. They not only connect us in the present but they also point us toward the future. Jesus entered human history by becoming one of us in the Incarnation whereby He united a fully human nature to a fully divine nature under one divine Personhood. This all happened in the context of a FAMILY.

The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph is not incidental nor accidental. God chose to enter our world and to effect salvation vis-à-vis the institution of the family. The shepherds and the Magi found the Christ-child with His mother and her husband. Jesus was born and raised IN A FAMILY. Back then, there was but one concept of family, namely, children living with their natural parents who also happened to married to each other. Marriage and Family were inseparable. Today, our secular culture and some of the politically correct aggressively seek to redefine both marriage and family. Marriage is the permanent, faithful and God willing fruitful union of ONE MAN + ONE WOMAN in a sacred covenant sealed with and in love. That love is both possessive and sacrificial; it gives and takes. Neither the State (civil government) or even the Church can redefine or remake what God originally established as perennially good, necessary and true.

Some fall into the trap of thinking that it is unfair to deny same sex marriage. It is no more unfair to respect, defend and uphold the natural restrictions on marriage to one man and one woman when polygamous marriages or under-age marriages are denied. If two men or two women can get married, then why not three men or one man and three wives? Why exclude those under 18? Are these not unfair limitations? No. They are reasonable and based on the essence and foundation of marriage. Likewise, the state and the church have a vested interest in defending real marriage by respecting its restriction to one man and one woman. Better yet would be the day when frequent and easy divorce also leave the scene. Stability is rooted in permanence and integrity is rooted in fidelity. The procreative dimension, however, as Pope Paul VI pointed out in Humanae Vitate, is equally indivisible from the unitive aspect of marriage. Love and Life are the foundations of family, society and religion.

Not only did Jesus grow up in a family (in Nazareth), He would also perform His first public miracle (at His mother's intercession) at a wedding feast (in Cana) where a new family was being initiated. Christ told us to pray to God OUR Father, implying that we are brothers and sisters in the Lord, albeit by adoption. BAPTISM makes us a child of God AND thereby you and I become adopted into the FAMILY of God.

When society attacks and dismantles traditional family values and seeks to unravel the fabric of civilization by reinventing marriage, the best and most prudent response is to DEFEND traditional marriage and traditional family (parents living with their child under one roof. Baptism is our being born again and allow us to appreciate being members of God's family we also call the Church. The Pope (Roman Pontiff) is the visible head of this family just as Saint Joseph was head of the Holy Family of Nazareth. Each diocesan family is headed by the local bishop and every parish family is under the shepherding of the pastor. Hence, priests are called "Father" and our spouse is known as "Holy Mother Church." These family references are essential and substantial. Tinker with marriage and the family and you undermine the foundation and cornerstone of both the Church and Civilization. Family is based on and operates on LOVE, sacrificial and receptive. A man and a woman GIVE themselves to each other and they TAKE each other for better or for worse, for richer or for poorer, in sickness and in health, all the days of their lives. Likewise, one baptized, you and I are permanent members of the faith family we call the Church and we must be willing to sacrifice for her and to receive all the graces and blessings she offers us.

Rev.
Blasphemous sacrilege against the Most Holy Eucharist

Dear Friends of Catholic Action for Faith & Family,

I urge you to support the efforts of America Needs Fatima, American TFP, LifeSiteNews.com, and the Confraternity of Catholic Clergy, et al., to urge and exhort YouTube immediately remove all videos depicting the desecration of purported Catholic hosts. Currently, forty videos are online showing the blasphemous sacrilege against the Most Holy Eucharist. We urge YouTube to show the same respect and decency it recently extended to our Jewish brothers and sisters when a similar incident occurred that greatly offended the children of Abraham.

YouTube removed a video showing a teenager urinating on the Holocaust memorial in Rhodes, Greece. It was taken down on August 27th, 2008, after five days of protests from Jewish communities around the world. Sadly, the same response has not been extended to Catholic Christians as the offensive videos showing desecration of the Eucharist have been up for more than two months. One of these forty videos shows a host being flushed down the toilet.

Another video shows someone literally absconding from a Catholic Mass with a Host in his possession. The ease with which persons can take Holy Communion since the option to receive in the hand was introduced in the late 20th century, and the subsequent acts of desecration and sacrilege, make it paramount that our bishops seriously consider revoking this method. Restricting reception to Communion on the Tongue and disallowing in the Hand is but one needed remedy. Greater reverence for the Blessed Sacrament will be enhanced not only by removing reception in the hand but also by encouraging the posture of kneeling as well. Placing the Tabernacle back in the center of our church sanctuaries is another solid sign of great reverence and belief in the Real Presence.

You and I can and should contact YouTube and politely and respectfully ask them to remove these offensive, hateful and repugnant videos JUST AS THEY REMOVED the equally abhorrent video desecrating the Jewish Holocaust memorial. We can also show more reverence ourselves to the Blessed Sacrament by voluntarily extending our Eucharistic fast from one hour to three hours before receiving Holy Communion. Some brave souls may even want to observe the more ancient practice of fasting from midnight onward. At least the three hour fast will be noticeable (to ourselves, i.e.). Making weekly Holy Hours of reparation either before the exposed Blessed Sacrament in a monstrance or before the Tabernacle. Kneel or genuflect each time you receive Holy Communion and on the tongue (all of which are valid and licit options, by the way.) Deo volente (God willing), our good example and deep reverence will encourage others to do likewise. And by all means pray for the deluded, deranged and desperate souls who are committing these vile acts of sacrilege. May God have mercy on their souls and may they soon repent.

Rev.
We Must Stand By Our Beliefs

Dear Friends,

Catholic Action for Faith and Family is more vital than ever thanks to the pernicious and prolific lies being spewed about our beloved religion. Sadly, the inaccuracies and errors are coming from our own kind, i.e., professed Catholics. Case in point, the recent debacle over the bizarre interpretation and application of faith and morals by Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi. When Senator Joe Biden was recently nominated democratic Vice Presidential candidate, his pro-abortion voting record and open support for Roe v. Wade were in direct conflict with his espoused Catholic religion. Pelosi, a fellow democrat, politician and Catholic, saw no incongruity when interviewed on Meet the Press.

She went on to defend her (their) commitment to protect abortion (rather than the unborn) by making the most preposterous argument. Pelosi claimed that the Church's teaching on the intrinsic evil of abortion is of recent vintage (50 years or so) while St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430 AD) maintained that it took three months for a human being to happen after conception. Such distortion of the facts and of the truth has not been seen since the old Soviet Union days when Tass News Agency regularly printed disinformation throughout the Iron Curtain.

As several prominent members of the American Hierarchy clarified (Archbishops Burke, Chaput, Wuerl; Bishops Aquila, Zubik, Sheridan; Cardinals Rigali, Egan), Holy Mother Church has perennially taught that abortion is wrong, evil and sinful. It has been consistently condemned for two millennia (from the Didache of 50 AD to the Catechism of 1992, #2271)

Secondly, the biology cited from Augustine was precisely that, a scientific opinion held by him and his contemporaries but NEVER considered an article of faith or morals. It was never a dogma or doctrine, rather, it was an acceptance of the primitive human biology HYPOTHESIZED by Aristotle, the ancient Greek, pre-Chrisitian era philosopher. Since the advent of modern medicine and with the help of X-Rays, MRI's, ultrasounds and sonograms, the hypothetical has been replaced by scientific fact. Once conception occurs, a new human being (and person) is procreated. The DNA of the embryo is HUMAN and it is distinct FROM the mother, i.e., it is evidently another being. This occurs at the moment of fertilization of the egg by the sperm and long before implantation onto the uterine wall. Aristotle and Augustine had no such sophisticated medicine and science, so they speculated on when the human person xisted. Nevertheless, even with their arcane biology, Augustine and the Church Fathers unanimously agreed that abortion at ANY moment after conception was gravely evil (mortal sin).

What Pelosi conspicuously left out was the other theory the ancient biology proposed, namely, that a woman was a male embryo gone bad. In other words, they believed that everyone begins as a male but some degenerate into females due to a genetic defect. You did not hear Nancy quoting that peculiar notion of women being deformed males yet she USED the idea that humans begin as vegetative, then develop into sentient and finally as rational life within the womb.

Her selective application of draconian biology while she flagrantly ignored current precise theological moral teachings consistently taught for two thousand years betrays her hidden agenda. Ten of her Catholic colleagues in Congress issued a letter repudiating her entire 'description' of Catholic morality on abortion and called her actions 'scandalous.' Yet, she is one of the highest ranking Catholics in government and if elected Vice President, Joe Biden will surpass her in duplicity when it comes to being a Catholic politician (since they openly support abortion).

We NEED Catholic Action for Faith and Family since the media has proven that many of our secular leaders and many within the press are clueless when it comes to precise explanation and application of Catholic doctrine on faith and morals. When these same politicians casually approach the Communion line, they send a signal of defiance, not only to the Magisterium but to God Himself, the Author of Truth and Source of Life.

Father John Trigilio, PhD, ThD
